Student loan repayment – options for relief
This standard practice statement updates and replaces SPS 11/03 Student Loans - Relief from repayment obligations.
The statement reflects the Student Loan Scheme Act 2011 and changes introduced by the Inland Revenue transformation programme to encourage borrowers to self-manage student loans via the myIR secure online service.
This standard practice statement was amended and republished 22 December 2020. The amendments were:
- Footnote 1 - Subpart 4 changed to Part 4
- Para 11 - exemption changed to tax year
- Para 18 - emphasis changed to timing of request rather than maximum duration of temporary repayment suspension
- Para 19 - list expanded to include voluntary work and borrower accompanying spouse or partner
